Wrexham Glyndwr University to Host Free Easter Football Coaching

Wrexham Glyndwr University will be hosting free football coaching and sports career-focused workshops over Easter.

To celebrate the launch of its new Football Coaching and the Performance Specialist degree, the University will host the three-day soccer college from Monday April 10.

Sessions run from 9.30am-2pm and are aimed at anyone interested in learning more about coaching and performing skills on the pitch.

The programme will focus on management styles, developing planning skills and scientific elements of the sport.

Organiser and University widening access coordinator, Sarah Gaffney, said: “We recognise the importance of sport in life – staying active, creating social bonds, and helping you to develop your potential.

“If you love football and want to help others develop their interest, skills and talent in any sport then this is a great opportunity for you.

“The course will introduce you to a range of skills for coaching, working at a variety of levels, including community and performance.”

The University’s Colliers Park training ground, which has previously hosted the Welsh National Football Team and Barcelona FC training sessions, is to host day three of the course – transport will be free for those who need it.

There are no entry requirements, though you must live within Wales to take part, and all attendees will receive a certificate of participation which can be used as evidence of experience within the field to build CV experience.

As well as the Football Coaching and the Performance Specialist degree, the University is recruiting to a BSc in Sports Coaching for Participation and Performance Development under the stewardship of programme leader Pamela Richards, Associate Head of the School of Social and Life Sciences.

She said: “The Football Coaching degree is designed in partnership with the FA of Wales (FAW) to prepare students who want to work as a coach or performance specialist.

“Students on the programme will work towards the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Level 2 (UEFA C) and Level 3 (UEFA B) coaching Licenses.

“Those completing the programme will develop the skills to work with youth and senior football teams at grassroots and a high performance level, as well as having a better understanding of the social context of the sport.”

Pam added: “Together with the FAW we want to play a major part in developing a vision where everyone can engage in sport whether it’s as a player, coach, sport scientist, manager or official.”

Among the course lecturers is Sara Hilton, who was crowned Performance Coach of the Year at the FA Wales (FAW) Community Awards in Cardiff, for her work across North East Wales.
