Work to upgrade a traffic signals system at a busy junction will soon be underway.

The traffic signal system on the A494 Pinfold Lane junction near Alltami is about 17 years old.

Because of its age it has become increasingly difficult to maintain and its reliability has become affected, causing congestion at peak times for heavy traffic flow on the A494.

After investigating, the Welsh Government has decided to replace the current system and the trunk road agent will work closely with Flintshire County Council to design and install the news system as soon as possible.

It is hoped the new system will be operating by early April 2017.

Until the new system can be installed and commissioned, the existing traffic signals system has been set up with a temporary arrangement which provides an additional green time interval for the A494.

This will have an effect of increasing the delay on the side road phasing but will improve reliability on the A494.

Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant welcomed the news. He said:

I’m pleased the Welsh Government has taken action to resolve a problem that was causing difficulties for local motorists.

There may be some short term inconvenience while the work takes place, but I’m sure everyone would agree that in the long term a new traffic signal system at this busy spot will get the traffic flowing smoothly once more.
