Welsh Government awards £10m to green energy projects across Wales

The Welsh Government has launched 2025 with a major investment in community green energy, allocating up to £10 million in grants to 32 projects across the country.
The funding, part of the Ynni Cymru programme, aims to support renewable energy generation and Smart Local Energy Systems that benefit local communities.
Projects receiving the funding range from solar panels and heat pumps to electric vehicle charging points and energy storage solutions.
Organisations set to benefit include schools, leisure centres, care homes, community centres, and sports clubs.
Among the local beneficiaries is Holywell Town Football Club, which will install Solar PV panels, battery storage, smart lighting, and a heat pump to reduce its carbon footprint while improving energy efficiency.
Rebecca Evans, the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, emphasised the importance of locally driven renewable energy initiatives.
“The wide-ranging benefits of smarter, greener energy generation and networks are clear – and we are committed to delivering that on every scale,” Ms Evans said. “There was a huge amount of interest in this support, which goes to show the enormous appetite for clean, smarter energy systems keeping benefits within our communities and reducing the need for large scale infrastructure.”
The Ynni Cymru programme was established to harness the potential of locally owned renewable energy systems and provide communities with tools to generate their own power.
Ms Evans added: “I’m delighted to be able to support so many quality projects which will each have a positive impact on the many who use them. I look forward to seeing Ynni Cymru continuing to support a range of local services and facilities whilst contributing to our low carbon commitments.”
This funding aligns with Wales’s broader commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. It also reinforces the government’s strategy to integrate renewable energy generation at every level, from national infrastructure projects to small-scale community initiatives.
The funded projects are expected to be implemented over the coming months, paving the way for smarter energy use across Wales.
