University of Chester to Host Free Lecture on Digital Drawing

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

How does the craft of drawing influence the development of drawing technology?

That is the question Professor Simon Grennan will examine in an Inaugural Professorial Lecture at the University of Chester’s Exton Park site on Wednesday, March 12.

Titled ‘Without meaningful recourse to trace: Grennan and Sperandio’s digital drawing in the 1990s’, the event will run from 6.30pm to 8pm at the School of Education and will celebrate Professor Grennan’s appointment as Professor of Art and Design.

Exploring Digital Drawing Innovations

Professor Grennan will discuss how international artist duo Grennan & Sperandio used emerging digital edge recognition and ‘point and line’ techniques in the 1990s. These innovations will be compared with older methods, such as tracing, animation, and traditional approaches to visualisation and the human form.

A practising artist, Professor Grennan is also Associate Dean of Research and Innovation in the University’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Since 1995, he has produced comic books and has a keen interest in how comic strips—a 19th-century medium—continue to shape the relationship between words and images.

Having trained as a fine artist, he established an international studio with American artist Christopher Sperandio in 1990. The duo has produced hundreds of projects and over 40 books to date.

How to Attend

The lecture is free to attend, and tea and coffee will be served beforehand.
