Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens has highlighted the critical role North Wales plays in boosting the Welsh economy, citing advanced manufacturing as a cornerstone for growth.

Speaking at a roundtable hosted by Toyota in Deeside, Ms Stevens reaffirmed the UK Government’s commitment to the region, backed by a £160 million investment in the Wrexham and Flintshire Investment Zone.

The funding is part of a broader £320 million pledge for two Welsh Investment Zones announced in the Autumn Budget.

It aims to drive economic growth, attract investment, and create jobs.

Ms Stevens highlighted how initiatives like these align with the Prime Minister’s “Plan for Change,” which seeks to enhance living standards and foster prosperity across the UK.

“I am focused on growing the economy in Wales and ensuring that people have more money in their pockets,” said Ms Stevens.

“The advanced manufacturing sector in North Wales is a vital driver for growth.

My commitment to North Wales business is personal—it is where I grew up, and I know how important it is for helping deliver growth and making a real difference to the people who live and work in this area.”

Toyota’s Deeside plant, a key player in the region’s economy for over 30 years, hosted the event. Richard Finchett, Director of Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration between business and government.

“Advanced manufacturing, including the automotive sector, remains vital for a dynamic economy. Today’s UK Government roundtable is an important step in the continued dialogue between business and government over our shared ambitions for economic growth, national prosperity and low-carbon leadership across Wales,” he said.

The Welsh Secretary’s visit follows the launch of the Welsh Economic Growth Advisory Group last week, aimed at shaping the UK Government’s new Industrial Strategy expected in spring 2025.

Ms Stevens has also met leaders from the digital, tech, and creative sectors in recent weeks.

John Whalley, Chief Executive of Aerospace Wales, also pointed to the importance of collaboration between the UK and Welsh governments.

“The aerospace and space sectors look forward to fruitful collaboration leading to greater prosperity for the people of Wales,” he said, referencing the Prime Minister’s recent announcement of £975 million investment in the aerospace sector during a visit to Airbus in Broughton.

The Wrexham and Flintshire Investment Zone is designed to build on the region’s strong manufacturing base. With its focus on advanced manufacturing, it is poised to bring high-value employment, skill development, and sustainable growth to the area.

By championing regional industries and providing targeted investments, the UK Government’s initiatives aim to solidify North Wales’ position as a key economic driver in Wales.
