The nation’s favourite film, “The Shawshank Redemption,” is coming to life on stage at Mold’s Theatr Clwyd.

Adapted by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns, this captivating production delves into the themes of desperation, injustice, friendship, and hope within the confines of a maximum-security prison.

The 1994 film, which starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, received seven Academy Award nominations and has since been recognised by the National Film Registry as a “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” film.

The story follows the journey of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to double life in prison at the infamous Shawshank facility.

Despite protests of his innocence, Andy befriends the prison fixer, Red, and navigates the corrupt practices of the Warden Stammas to hatch a daring plan.

Leading the cast in this thrilling stage production is Joe Absolom, who will play the role of Andy Dufresne, and Ben Onwukwe, reprising his critically acclaimed performance as Red.

Joe Absolom, who has a 25-year long career in TV, including roles in EastEnders, Doc Martin, and A Confession, says, “The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favourite films, an incredibly moving tale of friendship and injustice, and I’m thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Andy Dufresne on stage around the UK.”

Ben Onwukwe, who boasts a 30-year stage career, adds, “I’m delighted to be returning to the role of Red in this amazing production.

The Shawshank Redemption film is one which many hold close to their hearts, and it’s exciting to be bringing Stephen King’s story to new audiences.

It is a modern meditation on hope and in these times, it is hope that we need.”

The cast also includes Mark Heenehan as Warden Stammas, Kenneth Jay as Brooksie, Coulter Dittman as Tommy Williams, and many others.

The Shawshank Redemption will be performed at Theatr Clwyd from 27 February to 4 March in the Anthony Hopkins Theatre.

Tickets are available from £26 and can be purchased through Theatr Clwyd’s website or by calling 01352 344101.
