North Wales Police urged residents to avoid several roads due to significant flooding and hazardous conditions caused by melting snow and rainfall.

Police said at around 8 pm on Sunday that flooding has made the A548 at Llanerch y Mor, Holywell – near the Old Blacksmiths Holiday Park – and Gwespyr Hill impassable, with a landslip reported towards the bottom of the hill.

There were also reports of flooding on Chester Road in Flint and Tre Mostyn near Whitford.

In a statement shared on social media, North Wales Police advised: “Due to bad flooding on the following roads – we advise you to avoid the area if possible.”

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has issued a Flood Alert for areas around the River Dee from Llangollen to Trevalyn Meadows.

The alert, issued at 22:28 on 5 January, warned: “Forecasted rain combined with melted snow may lead to localised flooding in some areas in Wales tonight and into Monday.

Be careful if you’re travelling in affected areas.” NRW added that river levels have started to rise again and that the situation is being closely monitored.

Weather Warnings and Continued Disruption

A Yellow Weather Warning for snow and ice remains in effect from midnight to midday on Monday, 6 January, across the region.

The Met Office’s warning highlights the potential for treacherous conditions overnight and into Monday, with icy patches expected to develop widely, particularly on untreated roads and pavements.

The Met Office has advised:

  • Travel disruption is possible due to icy stretches on roads and pavements.
  • Untreated surfaces are particularly hazardous and could lead to slips or accidents.
  • Snowfall and low temperatures are expected to persist in higher areas, exacerbating the risks.

Travel and Safety Advice

Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution when travelling and to avoid flood-affected areas.

Motorists should plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time where necessary.

For up-to-date information on road closures, flooding alerts, and weather warnings, residents are advised to check the relevant social media channels or the websites of North Wales Police, Natural Resources Wales, and the Met Office.
