New footway and cycleway to improve travel in Aston and Hawarden

Flintshire County Council has begun work on a major active travel improvement project in Aston and Hawarden, funded by the Welsh Government.
The scheme aims to make walking and cycling safer and more accessible by introducing a new off-road, shared-use footway and cycleway along Lower Aston Hall Lane.
The project is part of Wales’ wider commitment to active travel, which refers to walking, cycling or using a mobility scooter for everyday journeys, such as commuting or school runs.
The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 was introduced to encourage people to choose these alternatives instead of driving, helping to reduce congestion and improve air quality.
Under the Act, local authorities must plan and map routes to support active travel and apply for funding to improve infrastructure.
In Aston and Hawarden, the new route will connect with the recently completed Aston Hill/A494 shared-use path, providing a safer and more convenient option for pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme will also include a new zebra crossing and essential carriageway improvements to further enhance travel safety.
Work on Lower Aston Hall Lane has now begun and is expected to last approximately 10 weeks.
Flintshire County Council has put traffic management measures in place during this period, but access will be maintained for residents, businesses and the public.
A spokesperson for Flintshire County Council said: “We appreciate the continued cooperation and support of the local community during these essential works, which will deliver long-term benefits for all.”
