Meet the Flintshire employment mentors helping young people to find jobs

Two mentors who are helping youngsters get their foot on the employment ladder in Flintshire have urged more to take advantage of their services.

Dan Wade and Coran Halfpenny-Williams, who are part of Communities for Work, provide free one-to-one assistance for people aged 16 to 24.

Their aim is help them identify and take practical steps to overcome barriers preventing them from finding a job.

The pair, who work for Flintshire County Council, can offer advice on writing CVs, interview skills and qualifications.

They also give information on work placements and volunteering, as well as providing links to local employers.

Dan, who is 38 and from Bangor in Gwynedd, has been supporting youngsters for the past 15 years and said he appreciated the challenges they often face.

“I’ve worked as mentor in Flintshire since July 2017 – a job I really love as it’s all about helping people and each day is different from the last,” he said.

“If I had to describe my role, I would say I’m like a big brother type.  I’m approachable and always out and about meeting new people and creating great working links with employers, training providers and fellow support agencies.

“I will be a second person to have your back and look out for your best interests in your journey looking for employment, training or education.

“Everyone is different – one person may need help with putting a CV together and sourcing suitable vacancies and these guys tend to move on very quickly into sustainable employment.

“Others may need more intensive support such as advice and guidance on identifying a career path that they may suit and enjoy.”You can contact Dan by calling or texting 07880 082558.

Coran is 27 and he joined the Communities for Work team in October 2019.

He said: “I have worked with a variety of people all from different backgrounds and all with different circumstances and gained skills which I am bringing to my current role.

“Together, we can look at possible training opportunities; interview skills and preparation; job searching; and create a new CV or edit your existing CV.”
