A new innovative study space for students has opened its doors at Wrexham Glyndwr University.

Aptly titled ‘The Study’, over the past six weeks the former staff area at the university has been transformed into a modern, social learning space for students.

The Study is colourful, stylish and practical, featuring energy efficient bespoke lighting and plenty of three-point and USB charging sockets.

There are several booths with comfortable leather sofas, table, acoustic panels and monitors that students can hook their devices up to in order to work collaboratively on Power Point presentations, videos or other creative projects.

Along the outer wall by large windows, small groups of armchairs and wingback chairs, tables and modern lamps create a cosy environment in which to catch up over a coffee to discuss work.

A long table and two high benches provide space to drop in to work on laptops and other devices, with charging points at each work station. These stations are collapsible giving the potential to also use the space for functions.

The work has been carried out on behalf of Wrexham Glyndwr University by Day Architecture and Spatial Office Environments, which is owned by university alumnus Phil Simmonds.

Estates and Campus Manager Mike Hamer explained that The Study “is the beginning of a new chapter for Wrexham Glyndwr University”.

He continued: “Its functionality supports the evolution of collaborative social learning, whilst its innovative design utilising modern contemporary materials sets the scene for other exciting developments which will be delivered as part of the Campus 2025 Estates strategy.

“Completing the study in just six weeks with minimal disruption is testament to what focused teamwork can produce. The collaboration between Day Architectural Ltd and Spatial Office Environments has delivered a bespoke high-end space where technology is integral to the design and use of space.

“We hope that The Study is a space that students will want to come to and importantly, stay.”

The new space has been welcomed by university students, who have praised the “impressive facility” .

Game development student Dan Olliver, said: “It’s great to have a dedicated space for students to meet for group work instead of having to try to find an empty room which can affect timetables.”

Effy Daniels, who is is studying a masters degree in Unmanned Aircraft Systems, added: “I really like the colours and it looks really professional. It’s really nice place and the seats are so comfy – I will be spending a lot of time here for group work.”

Campus 2025 is Wrexham Glyndwr University’s strategy to significantly improve all areas of its campuses. Plans include new student accommodation, improved IT and AV facilities and upgraded teaching and research rooms.
