Households urged to submit meter readings before 1 April

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Nine million households in the UK are being urged to submit their energy meter readings before 1 April to avoid being charged higher rates, according to Uswitch.com.

The price cap on standard variable tariffs (SVTs) will increase from next month, and those without smart meters who fail to provide up-to-date readings risk overpaying by a collective £34 million.

Consumers on SVTs are advised to record their readings on or around 31 March to prevent suppliers from estimating their usage at the higher April rates.

Uswitch warns that without an updated reading, households could see a week’s worth of energy charged at 6.4% higher rates, potentially adding an extra £3.62 per home.

At the same time, energy comparison services are highlighting fixed tariff options that could help customers save money.

Fixed deals currently available on the market could save the average household around £239 compared to the new April price cap. These savings are the highest seen since May 2024.

Ben Gallizzi, an energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “With the price cap rising on 1 April, it’s important to submit a meter reading to avoid paying higher rates on any energy that you don’t need to.

“Now is also an ideal time to look at switching to a new energy tariff, as there are a range of fixed deals currently available that are around £239 cheaper than the April price cap for the average household.

“By opting for a fixed deal, you’re locking in those rates for the duration – which means households could have price certainty and avoid the ups and downs of the price cap.”

Households are encouraged to compare tariffs and consider switching before the increase takes effect.

With energy prices expected to remain volatile, analysts do not foresee major reductions in the price cap in the near future.
