Fallen trees, road closures, and school closures have caused significant disruption across Flintshire as Storm Éowyn sweeps through the region.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for strong winds in Flintshire, with gusts reaching 70-80 mph inland and potentially higher in exposed coastal areas.

Several roads in Flintshire have been affected by fallen trees and damage caused by high winds.

The A5026 Holywell Road is currently blocked in both directions between Old Bagillt Road and Victoria Park due to a fallen tree.

Kinnerton Road is also closed between Bramley Lane and Shordley Road following a collision and fallen power cables.

North Wales Police have urged caution, stating: “Amber weather warning is now in place. Our Control Room is experiencing a high volume of calls due to road disruptions across the region. Please take extra care if you are travelling today.”

Waste and recycling collections are continuing across Flintshire, but crews are warning of potential disruption due to the severe weather conditions.

Residents may experience delays or changes to their usual collection schedule, the council has warned.

All Household Recycling Centre sites in Flintshire are closed today (24 January) as a precaution to ensure the safety of both employees and the public.

Flintshire Council has stated it will monitor conditions throughout the day and provide updates if any sites can reopen safely.

In addition, the A548 Flintshire Bridge is scheduled to close from 9 am on Friday, 24 January, in response to the amber weather warning for strong winds. The closure will remain in place until the weather improves and the bridge is deemed safe for use.

Meanwhile, Transport for Wales has cancelled numerous services, including those on the Wrexham to Bidston line.

Replacement bus services are being sought, but delays are expected throughout the day.

Transport for Wales apologised for the inconvenience, stating: “We’re working with our provider to source replacement road transport. We apologise for the disruption to your journey.”

Three schools have closed for the day in response to public safety concerns. Elfed High School in Buckley, Connahs Quay High School, and Ysgol Rhos Helyg in Rhosesmor have all announced full closures as a precaution amid the severe weather conditions.

Met Office Reports High Wind Speeds

The latest wind gusts recorded across the UK illustrate the severity of Storm Éowyn. The strongest gust, 93 mph, was recorded at Aberdaron in Gwynedd at 7 am. Other notable speeds include Killowen, Down, at 92 mph (6 am), Capel Curig, Conwy, at 87 mph (4 am), Lake Vyrnwy, Powys, at 86 mph (5 am), Dundrennan, Kirkcudbrightshire, at 86 mph (9 am), Thomastown, Fermanagh, at 85 mph (9 am), and Orlock Head, Down, at 85 mph (7 am).

The amber weather alert warns of a high risk of injuries and danger to life from flying debris and potential damage to buildings.

Power cuts are likely, with mobile phone coverage also potentially affected.

Residents have been advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid coastal areas, and prepare for possible power outages by gathering essential supplies.

Authorities recommend delaying non-essential journeys and driving with caution if travel is unavoidable.

As the day progresses, the winds are expected to ease slightly before strengthening again later this evening.

Adrian Simpson, Head of Policy at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: “We urge everyone to take these precautions seriously to ensure their safety during Storm Éowyn. The expected conditions are severe, and it is crucial to stay informed and prepared. The public’s safety is RoSPA’s top priority.”

RoSPA’s Safety Guidelines

On the Road
Avoid travel: If possible, avoid travelling during the storm. High winds can make driving hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles.
Drive cautiously: If travel is unavoidable, reduce your speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and be alert for debris on the road.
Check routes: Stay updated on road conditions and closures by checking local traffic reports and weather updates.

At Home
Secure loose items: Ensure that outdoor furniture, bins, and other loose items are secured or brought indoors to prevent them from being blown away.
Stay indoors: Remain indoors as much as possible. Keep windows and doors closed to prevent wind damage.
Emergency kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a first aid kit.

Near Coastal Areas
Avoid coastal paths: Stay away from coastal paths, promenades, and piers. High waves and strong winds can create dangerous conditions.
Monitor alerts: Pay attention to local weather alerts and follow the advice of authorities regarding evacuations or safety measures.

General Advice
Stay informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest weather forecasts and warnings from reliable sources.
Help vulnerable neighbours: Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to ensure they are safe and have everything they need.
Emergency contacts: Have a list of emergency contact numbers readily available, including local authorities and utility companies.
