In an appeal made during the Welsh Conservative Debate on International Men’s Day, North Wales Member of the Senedd (MS) Mark Isherwood has brought to light the often-overlooked issue of domestic abuse against men and boys.

Emphasising the need for specialist tailored support for male survivors, Mr Isherwood’s intervention underscores a significant gap in the current support systems that predominantly focus on female victims.

Citing statistics from the Office for National Statistics, the Flintshire based MS pointed out that a third of domestic abuse victims are male, including boys and children.

His statement, “Do you agree therefore with me that we need specialist tailored support accessible to people in safe spaces in their own areas if they are victims or survivors, men and boys as well as women?” reflects a growing awareness and concern for male victims who, according to Mr Isherwood, require accessible support in their local areas.

Peter Fox MS, aligning with Mr Isherwood’s views, reiterated the importance of this issue.

Mr Fox acknowledged the severity of the problems faced by women but highlighted that men and boys also face daunting challenges in domestic abuse situations and are often ignored.

Mr Isherwood, who has consistently raised this matter in the Welsh Parliament over the years, made a poignant observation in 2021, stating, “Whilst women are far more likely than men to be killed by partners or ex-partners, men can be victims too, and the number of men killed as a result of domestic violence has been rising.” This statement not only reflects the increasing severity of the issue but also the necessity for a gender-inclusive approach to domestic abuse support.

The call for tailored support for male victims of domestic abuse is a crucial step in addressing the broader spectrum of domestic violence.
