Chairman of Flintshire County Council Councillor Peter Curtis led a ceremony on Saturday morning outside County Hall in Mold thanking seafarers on Merchant Navy Day.

Cllr Curtis was joined at the ceremony by county councillors including Cllr Ron Hampson and Cllr Clive Carver who are both Merchant Navy veterans.

Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day held on 3 September has honoured the UK’s seafaring men and women.

As an island nation’ the UK relies on Merchant Navy seafarers for 95% of our imports, including half the food we eat.

The UK has the largest ports industry in Europe. 75% of our exports (by volume) are shipped from UK ports, some of which are supported the campaign by encouraging visiting ships to sound their horns at 10am this morning.
