Explore Mold’s past with new guided walking tours

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Mold Town Council has announced the launch of a new series of free guided historic walking tours, giving residents and visitors the chance to explore the town’s fascinating past.

The first tours will take place on Sunday 23 March, running alongside the Sunday Gathering Artisan Market in Daniel Owen Square.

The guided walks, led by volunteer experts, will cover a variety of historical themes, including Mold’s general history, the town’s pubs and breweries, and the role of churches and chapels in shaping the community.

Each tour will last between 60 to 90 minutes and pre-booking is essential due to limited spaces.

A spokesperson for Mold Town Council said: “Our knowledgeable volunteer guides will share interesting facts and anecdotes about the town’s past, making these tours a must-attend for history buffs and curious minds alike.”

A Choice of Four Tours on Launch Day

The first walks will take place on Sunday 23 March, with four different routes available:

  • Wrexham Street and New Street – 10:00am
Explore an area once described as a working-class hub in the 1920s, home to listed buildings, a plant nursery, a tannery, and tripe shops. Look out for the house with a unique link to Queen Victoria.

  • General History of Mold – 11:30am
A journey through Mold’s past, from its roots following the Norman invasion of 1066 to its role in one of World War II’s most significant military deceptions.

  • Pubs & Breweries of Mold – 1:00pm
Discover the history of the town’s many former pubs, including stories of a preacher and a bear, a pub with a cockpit, and World War II connections.

  • Churches & Chapels of Mold – 2:30pm
Visit St Mary the Virgin, one of Mold’s historic landmarks, and hear about John Wesley’s visit in 1759, alongside the growth of non-conformity in the town’s religious institutions.

Further tour dates are scheduled for 27 April, 25 May, 29 June, 27 July, 31 August, 28 September, and 26 October 2025, with different historic themes rotating each month.

The guided walks coincide with the Sunday Gathering Artisan Market (10am-2pm), where visitors can browse stalls in Daniel Owen Square and the Daniel Owen Centre. Many town shops will also be open, along with a selection of cafés, pubs, and restaurants, with pre-booking recommended at some venues.

Mold Town Council encourages visitors to make the most of their trip: “While you’re here, why not enjoy the artisan market, grab a bite to eat, and explore all that Mold has to offer?”
