Deeside solicitors sudden closure prompts watchdog investigation

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has intervened in the practice of a Deeside-based law firm following its sudden closure earlier this month.
The action by the solicitors’ watchdog at EA Harris & Co Ltd, based in Shotton, takes effect immediately and aims to protect the interests of clients and former clients left in limbo by the firm’s unexpected shutdown.
The intervention applies to EA Harris & Co Ltd’s main office at Transport House, 54 Chester Road East, Deeside, and its branch office at The Cross, Padeswood Road, Buckley. Explaining the decision, the SRA said:
“An intervention means the SRA has closed a firm with immediate effect. It will stop the firm from operating, take possession of all documents and papers held by the firm, and take possession of all money held by the firm (including clients’ money).”
The regulator confirmed that the intervention was necessary due to concerns over client protection following reports of abandonment.
Clients Do Not Need to Take Immediate Action
The SRA has appointed John Owen of Gordons LLP, Bradford, as the intervening agent to assess ongoing matters.
His role includes reviewing active cases, prioritising urgent issues, and ensuring the safe management of client documents, including wills and deeds.
The SRA has reassured clients that they do not need to take immediate action. However, those with urgent concerns can contact the intervening agent.
Ongoing Investigation Into EA Harris Closure
The SRA has also launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the firm’s closure. While no further details have been disclosed, the regulator has stated that there is no set timeframe for the inquiry.
Should further action be necessary, the SRA has the authority to issue sanctions such as fines of up to £25,000 or refer the matter to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT). The SDT can impose unlimited fines, suspensions, or permanent disqualifications from the profession.
