Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn and Deeside, has launched a Christmas appeal to help brighten the festive season for children affected by domestic abuse.

He is appealing to members of the local community to consider buying an extra selection box or toy this year and donating it to his collection for the Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (DASU) in Shotton.

“Children helped by DASU fortunately have escaped their former dangerous environment and are in a place of safety. However they might have left home with very little, or might worry whether Father Christmas will find them.

“Guaranteeing them a gift, however small, will brighten their day and give the affected parent a lift. I’d urge anyone who can afford an extra gift to leave it at my office for DASU.” Said Carl Sargeant

DASU’s Gina Edwards said:

“We are very grateful to Carl Sargeant and his continued support for our work in supporting victims of domestic abuse.

“We have a women’s refuge that provides accommodation for four women and their children and a refuge for men.  We also support many families in the community who have been subject to abusive behaviours from a partner, ex-partner or family member; some may have moved into Flintshire to escape abusive partners elsewhere.

“Christmas time can be an overwhelming financial challenge for families, but for those escaping domestic abuse it can be even more difficult. Children in refuge may particularly feel the loss of their home, extended family, pets and friends and it can be an emotional challenge for everyone involved.  Support from our community, organisations and individuals is so helpful because it not only provides gifts but it makes such a difference because it says that you care and that is invaluable.”

Donations can be taken to the Alyn and Deeside AM’s office at 70 High Street, Connah’s Quay, CH5 4DD, Monday to Friday, 9.30am-4.30am.

The gifts will be delivered the morning of Thursday, December 22, so any gifts will need to be received by 4.30pm on Wednesday, December 21.
