Aldi confirms August opening for new Deeside store

Aldi has confirmed that its new supermarket in Deeside will open in August, bringing around 40 jobs and an expanded shopping choice to the local area.
The discount supermarket chain is developing the store at the Airfields site in Garden City as part of a multi-million-pound investment.
Plans for the site, which include a drive-thru Greggs and an electric vehicle charging hub with 18 spaces, were approved in November.
The store will have a sales area of 1,356 square metres, with a total of 176 parking spaces.
Access will be provided from the main spine road near the development.
In a planning statement, Aldi said: “The development’s strategic location will reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for their weekly groceries, promoting local shopping and community engagement.”
Construction is already underway, and Aldi has confirmed that the store is on track to open in mid-August 2025.
The recruitment process has begun, with Aldi will be inviting applications for up to 40 positions at the store.
The new store forms part of the wider redevelopment of the former RAF Sealand air base on Welsh Road, where hundreds of new homes are being built.
Flintshire currently has three Aldi supermarkets in Mold, Buckley, and Flint, with the new Deeside store set to further expand the retailer’s presence in the county.
Aldi’s Expansion in the UK
Aldi was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 when they took over their mother’s grocery store in Essen, Germany.
The name “Aldi” is derived from “Albrecht Diskont” and was introduced in 1962.
The supermarket chain entered the UK market in 1990, opening its first store in Stechford, Birmingham.
Since then, Aldi has pursued a strategy of rapid expansion, with a goal of reaching 1,500 stores across the UK.
Aldi’s success has been driven by its focus on affordability, streamlined operations, and investment in store improvements.
The retailer stocks around 1,700 products—far fewer than the 20,000-30,000 typically found in larger supermarkets—allowing for lower prices and greater efficiency.
Around 94% of Aldi’s products are private-label, helping maintain competitive pricing while ensuring profitability.
In response to economic challenges such as inflation and the cost of living crisis, Aldi has seen significant customer growth.
By 2023, it had attracted an additional one million shoppers and committed to an £800 million investment package to accelerate its UK expansion—the largest annual investment in its history.
Aldi’s market share has grown significantly as a result.
By September 2022, it had reached 9.3%, overtaking Morrisons to become the fourth-largest supermarket chain in the UK.
