15,000 households to take part in Wales National Travel Survey

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A new survey designed to collect data on travel behaviour and attitudes across Wales has been launched by the Welsh Government.

The Wales National Travel Survey aims to provide insights into how people move around the country, with findings set to influence transport policy and help track progress towards Net Zero targets.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates MS, announced the initiative, describing it as a vital tool in strengthening transport planning: “The survey will allow us to track progress towards our Net Zero targets, such as increasing walking, wheeling, cycling, and public transport usage.”

The survey, which is being run by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) on behalf of Transport for Wales (TfW), will take place over the next three years.

Around 15,000 randomly selected households across Wales will be invited to take part each year, with participation available online, via telephone, or through face-to-face interviews.

Informing Future Transport Policy

The data collected will contribute to long-term transport planning and will be used to assess progress against key Welsh Government strategies, including Llwybr Newydd: The Wales Transport Strategy and Net Zero Wales Carbon Budget 2.

Responses will help TfW and policymakers better understand public needs and improve services accordingly.

The survey has been designed to ensure representation of all adults aged 16 or over living in private households across Wales.

Participants will be invited on a rolling basis, with new batches of respondents added weekly to reflect seasonal travel patterns.

Results will be published annually at both national and regional levels, with preliminary findings from the first six months expected in March 2026.

Ken Skates encouraged those invited to take part: “I would encourage anyone who receives an invite to participate in the Wales National Travel Survey to take part and contribute their views and experiences to this important research.”

How to Take Part

Only those selected will be able to complete the survey.

Households will receive an invitation letter explaining how they can take part, with up to two adults per household able to participate online, or one adult via telephone or in-person interview.

Further details about the survey and its development can be found on the Transport for Wales website.
